Logo design for startups: what to commission first
In short
A startup logo brief should name the applications needed now, the languages and the files to be delivered. A wider identity can follow when the offer is clearer; it need not be commissioned before you know what the business will sell.
A new business can spend too little on the files it needs, or commission a large identity before the offer is settled. The useful starting question is more specific: where must the brand appear at launch?
For a business serving Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf, list Arabic and English applications separately. An invoice, a small profile image and a shop sign place different demands on the same mark.
What you need at the start
- An original mark with a documented design process, rather than an unexplained stock asset.
- Arabic and Latin versions where the audience and applications need them.
- Versions for small sizes, light backgrounds and dark backgrounds.
- A consistent set of colours and typefaces for the first applications.
- A short usage guide that another designer can follow.
Ask to see the longest business name and the smallest real application during review. A large presentation image alone does not show whether the logo works on a label or invoice.
What can wait
A long brand book and a large campaign system can wait if the launch does not need them. Packaging and signage cannot wait if they are necessary to sell the first product. Decide by the launch plan, rather than by a general rule that every startup needs the same package.
A smaller first commission should still explain how the system can grow. Record which decisions are settled and which applications are outside the current offer.
Compare scope before price
| Item | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Original work | Research and design responsibilities |
| Languages | Arabic and Latin versions included in the quote |
| Files | Vector files, screen exports and small-size versions |
| Rights | Agreed use, transfer and any third-party licences |
At Alkeme Design, logo design starts from $1,400 (≈ AED 5,150), with the specific fixed price agreed before work. The logo design service describes the scope. For the broader cost question, see logo design cost.
Avoid paying for the same decisions twice
Replacing a logo can also mean replacing printed and digital applications. Before choosing a supplier, ask about versions, source files and written rights. Keep the brief, approved design and handover list together.
A complete visual identity is a wider commission. Its purpose and budget should follow the applications your business actually needs, rather than an assumption that a logo quote includes everything.
