Instagram Grid

Instagram grid format: working sizes, crops and exports

In short

The working canvas, uploaded media and visible profile crop are different things. Record and check each for the actual account and image. The dimensions in this guide are labelled design examples, not a claim about every current platform limit.

A brand grid should connect the posts while leaving each one understandable. That requires suitable working files, useful templates and checks of the actual previews. One dimension cannot describe every view.

For Arabic and English text, use real titles and names in the files. Correct lettering at the working size does not establish readability in a small profile preview.

A 3:4 working canvas

A canvas of 1080 × 1440 pixels has a 3:4 ratio. It can be used to plan a portrait image, with important content away from edges that might be cropped.

That mathematical ratio is not a claim that every current upload, account or surface presents an identical view. Inspect the actual crop before exporting the full series.

Record three layers for each file

Track the working canvas, intended upload and observed profile crop separately. For a reel, also record the cover. Label the file version and purpose so a draft preview is not mistaken for the final export.

The official Instagram photo-resolution help page could not be read in the check for this adaptation. Accordingly, this guide does not present its examples as verified current platform limits or a completed account test.

Working examples at a glance

Design use Example ratio Example dimensions
Portrait photo 3:4 1080 × 1440 pixels
Vertical sequence 9:16 1080 × 1920 pixels
Profile image draft Square Test the actual circular preview

These are canvases for design work. Confirm upload specifications and previews before production approval, especially where the account or placement differs.

Ratios as arithmetic examples

Example canvas Ratio Calculation
1080 × 1080 1:1 Height equals width
1080 × 1350 4:5 1080 × 5 ÷ 4
1080 × 1440 3:4 1080 × 4 ÷ 3
1080 × 1920 9:16 1080 × 16 ÷ 9

The numbers describe geometry. Whether a particular upload or crop is supported requires a separate check. None is a universal approval for organic posts, reel covers and paid ads together.

What dimensions belong in the brief?

Name the width, height, destination and crop to inspect. ‘Instagram feed size’ without the intended surface leaves the task unclear.

Record the account, view and preview date. Review the single post and profile tile separately. The same title can be readable in the first and too small in the second.

A grid is a repeatable system

Agree templates, typography and an image approach derived from the wider identity. Different roles can look different while sharing those decisions.

A product explanation and an announcement need not use identical shapes. The system should accept real new content rather than depend on maintaining a perfect colour sequence forever.

What the documented examples show

Pucca Diana documents a social system related to its personal identity. ESA Optim Trans documents a grid alongside stories and a reel. Apexor connects social applications with its product-brand rules.

Those show coordinated applications, not a required post count for every brand or evidence that a particular profile crop is universally supported.

Connect reels and stories with the same identity

Plan the relevant title and cover separately from the motion sequence. A full-height composition can lose key information in another preview.

Check the actual presentation rather than assuming a crop from a design screenshot. Where highlights or other profile elements are part of the scope, give them their own approved files and tests.

Approve posts, carousels and reels separately

Kate Sun documents carousel and story templates as distinct applications. ESA’s social work includes a 15-second reel. Neither is fully described by one grid canvas.

Review an opened view and profile preview for each relevant item. For a carousel, check real wording across the title and following pages, including language-specific reading order where relevant.

Plan existing content before rearrangement

Audit current posts and check available account controls. If a reordering function is unavailable, future publications can still follow a coherent system.

A set of around nine posts is a manageable scope, not a promise about the exact first screen every viewer sees. Preserve useful material and plan the transition from its actual role.

Profile image, introduction and highlights

Review the surrounding profile presentation with the grid. The introduction should explain the offer and the next contact route. Do not infer a search position from adding a phrase to it.

Confirm the actual business name and approved language forms. Keep them coherent with the website without inventing a local presence to complete a template.

Common mistakes to check

Important text at the edge can be cropped. Unrelated image treatments can weaken the shared identity. A tile that only makes sense beside its neighbour can fail as an individual post.

Test these problems with the actual material. More templates do not fix a missing rule about titles, pictures or content roles.

Design the opened post, preview and cover separately

Mark where the same image must remain understandable. A full post, small tile and video cover have different information needs.

Use the observed crop to review the actual title and product. Do not assume a fixed universal safe margin. Account interfaces and selected crops need their own evidence before final export.

Keep important information within tested crops

Compare the title, face or product name in each relevant preview. You can record those observed crops on a separate layer in the working file.

The layer is a project aid, not an official platform percentage. A portfolio example does not provide tested pixel margins for every title or mark.

Use an export record instead of a universal rule

Record filename, dimensions, type, size, account, app version and preview date. Add a screenshot of the actual outcome where the test is performed.

This is a proposed workflow, not an authenticated test reported by the article. Paid-placement specifications need their own current check and cannot be inferred from organic design canvases.

A practical route for designing it yourself

Gather real photos and upcoming topics. Organise them by purpose, then build a few templates. Fill them with short and long titles and review them individually and together.

Export a test and inspect the intended previews before producing the whole series. Keep shared typography and image decisions while allowing different content roles to have appropriate layouts.

Why a puzzle grid can be difficult to maintain

A combined image makes individual tiles depend on their neighbours. That may fit a specific presentation, but an urgent new post can disrupt the composition.

Check whether each tile conveys something useful alone and whether the system accepts additional material. A flexible template set can be more practical for a small team than a composition that must remain untouched.

Hand templates over for actual use

Explain editable fields, image treatment, title limits and the current file location. Test the handover with a real new post.

If the user must arbitrarily shrink text or crop away important details, revise the template or supply a justified alternative. A clear rule can help more than another decorative layout.

What a grid costs

Our grid set starts from $480 (≈ AED 1,750) for around nine posts. Specify editable templates, content, extra formats and any existing-profile work separately.

The Instagram grid service and pricing explain the starting scope. An example project’s larger social output is not automatically included at that price.

What belongs in the commission?

Agree the content, copy scope, templates and exports to approve. Keep the technical crop check distinct from planning the feed’s content.

Send the current profile, brand files and next topics to define a usable set. The aim is a maintained system, with actual output checked before it becomes a whole production run.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Instagram grid?

The profile overview showing previews of published posts. Distinguish it from an opened post and the home feed.

What size should I use for a grid design?

A 3:4 working example is 1080 × 1440 pixels. Confirm the supported upload and actual profile crop separately in current official guidance and the account preview.

What canvas can I use for vertical stories or reels?

1080 × 1920 pixels is a 9:16 design example. It is not a guarantee that all views, covers and paid placements use the same crop or specification.

Does the grid need a fixed post count?

No universal minimum is established here. Our grid set starts from $480 (≈ AED 1,750) for around nine posts; the content and exports are agreed for the actual scope.

Can the profile grid be rearranged?

Check the actual account controls separately. An export format does not establish that an ordering function is available.
