Shopify or a custom online store in the UAE?

In short

Choose a platform or custom store by testing the same requirements: content, languages, buying journey, maintenance and a future move. A low monthly starting price does not describe the whole cost. Shopify, Wix and regional platforms can belong on the shortlist, but the actual plan and workflow must fit the business. Custom development needs the same practical checks.

A platform is suitable when it meets the business’s actual requirements. Custom development becomes useful when content, design or workflows need a different level of control. Either route can be well or poorly planned.

“Shopify or an agency?” also combines two decisions: Shopify is a platform; an agency or studio is a supplier. A supplier can develop a platform-based site, and bespoke code alone does not settle the content or customer journey.

What can a platform handle for you?

A hosted platform combines editing tools with a defined technical framework. That can reduce the amount your team needs to organise separately.

Someone still has to prepare product facts, copy, imagery and updates. Internal work also uses time. Compare the full path to a usable store rather than one subscription price against a studio’s entire project fee.

Define requirements before choosing the supplier

List pages, languages, forms, catalogue needs, checkout steps and responsible editors. Test each essential item using real content. For a calculator, include its rules and required result.

The Cargo Brothers documents a custom pricing tool for vehicle transport. That is a specific functional requirement beyond a basic company introduction. The record does not provide a controlled cost comparison with a builder.

When can you build it yourself?

A platform can fit when the complete content and workflow are supported by the actual plan. Build a representative page with the real text, images and contact or purchase route.

Then try maintenance: can the intended editor add an item or change information without rebuilding the layout? Note additional services and manual work. Test a custom proposal against the same tasks.

Wix: test the multilingual content workflow

Wix documents manual and automatic translation tools and language-specific SEO settings. That makes it relevant to a shortlist for a business needing several content functions in one platform.

The test remains the actual page and editor experience. Check the selected plan, required features and the team’s ability to keep both language versions current. SEO fields do not by themselves demonstrate useful content or search performance.

Shopify: separate language support from the finished experience

Shopify documents additional languages with their own URLs and translated content. Missing translations can leave default-language content visible, so a bilingual store needs an editorial and testing process.

Test the theme and the full route with approved Arabic and English content. Review the required payment, delivery and integration arrangements for the actual business rather than assuming every option is available through one subscription.

The platform can provide a framework; it does not choose the correct scope or supply all product information automatically.

Salla and Zid: assess the regional requirement

Salla presents its platform for merchants in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Zid also provides a commerce platform. They can be considered when the business’s operational requirements make them relevant.

Check the actual account, country eligibility, language needs, payment arrangements, shipping and required extensions directly. A regional focus is not proof that every specific workflow fits.

Use the same representative product and customer journey for each option. Record a requirement as confirmed only after the relevant demonstration or documentation supports it.

Squarespace: include the later move in the comparison

Test Squarespace with representative content and imagery if it is on the shortlist. Assess the actual pages and functions rather than the appearance of a sample design alone.

Its export documentation distinguishes exportable content from features and design that do not transfer in the same way. An XML content export is not a complete ready-to-run replacement website.

Ask every supplier the same question: what can be taken to another system, and what would need rebuilding?

Compare the actual plans and evidence

Option Official starting reference Record before committing
Shopify Language and plan documentation Compatibility, operational services and extensions
Wix Multilingual documentation Content workflow, chosen plan and maintenance
Salla Platform and relevant account documentation Country and workflow suitability
Zid Platform and relevant account documentation Required services and supported process
Squarespace Export and plan documentation Content transfer and rebuilding requirements

Test maintenance and exit practically

Ask the intended editor to create a new page or product with text, an image and a contact route. Then establish which content and resources can be exported and what a move would involve.

Pucca Diana’s project documents static files. That confirms the implementation of that project; it does not prove every custom site can move without work or cost.

When does bespoke work make sense?

More control may be useful for a particular product explanation, quotation workflow or connection to an existing business system. The Cargo Brothers’ price engine illustrates one such requirement.

Bespoke does not automatically mean easy to maintain. Agree editing, documentation, access and support. A content management system can still be appropriate within a custom design.

The custom tools service describes another relevant part of the scope when rules or calculations are central.

Use real projects to explain the scope

Pucca Diana documents a bilingual website. Chimbá documents six origins and guides in Spanish and English. These examples show why information structure and upkeep belong in the technical comparison.

They do not establish that a platform cannot support comparable content or that every custom site needs the same size. Assess the actual requirement rather than using the portfolio as a universal platform verdict.

Make the cost comparison fair

Our Starter website begins from $2,400 (≈ AED 8,800). The proposal specifies the design, content and technical work; domain, hosting, photography and legal wording need separate consideration.

Compare that assignment with platform setup, subscriptions, extensions and internal time. For a UAE business, include the actual Arabic and English requirement and responsibility for legal content appropriate to the business.

The website cost guide explains those positions. Ecommerce functions require their own agreed scope; the published website level is not an automatic promise of every shop feature.

Build a 36-month cost model

Use: setup + 36 × recurring monthly services + additional content + maintenance + a planned move. Use a consistent commercial basis and distinguish introductory and renewal costs.

Our website levels start from $2,400 (≈ AED 8,800), from $6,400 (≈ AED 23,500) and from $12,000 (≈ AED 44,050). They do not specify every hosting, maintenance or ecommerce item, so they cannot alone produce a substantiated 36-month total.

Enter the actual service terms and responsibilities. The model is a comparison method, not a prediction based on invented subscription values.

Decide from demonstrated tasks

Use the same acceptance list for both routes: complete content, correct core function, a working contact or buying journey, manageable upkeep and documented exit conditions.

If evidence is missing, leave the requirement open instead of awarding a score. The project examples provide real requirements, not a completed equal-content platform trial.

Read the ecommerce service or send your catalogue, languages and essential workflow to define a proposal around what your business needs.

Frequently asked questions

When is a platform enough?

When the required content, functions and maintenance tasks work in the chosen plan. Test a complete page and buying or enquiry journey with actual content before committing.

When is custom development useful?

When the brief needs a particular structure, workflow or integration that the selected platform cannot adequately support. The Cargo Brothers' documented price engine illustrates a specific custom requirement, not proof that every business needs bespoke code.

What does a custom website cost?

Our published website levels start from $2,400 (≈ AED 8,800), from $6,400 (≈ AED 23,500) and from $12,000 (≈ AED 44,050). They are website starting points, not automatic prices for every ecommerce implementation. The proposal defines catalogue, checkout and integration work.

Can Shopify support several languages?

Shopify documents multiple store languages and translated content. Theme compatibility and the actual Arabic and English journey still need review, including missing translations, forms and checkout.

Is a builder inherently worse for search?

No. A platform choice alone does not establish search performance. Useful content, accessible pages and appropriate structure remain necessary. Wix documents multilingual SEO settings, while custom development also requires correct implementation.

Can I move to another system later?

Assess what can be exported and what must be rebuilt. Content exports, design, integrations and operational data are different parts of a move. Check account access and redirects before choosing.

How should costs be compared?

Use the same brief and period, including setup, renewals, extra services, content work, maintenance and a planned move. A 36-month model is a useful planning exercise, not a forecast without actual quotes.
