SEO, GEO and AEO: differences and the right evidence
In short
SEO, GEO and AEO describe overlapping visibility goals: search results, generated answers and direct answers. An offer still needs specific changes and appropriate evidence. The acronyms alone do not define a verifiable service.
New acronyms can make discoverability sound like several unrelated technical disciplines. Start with the actual customer question and the evidence needed to evaluate the result.
For Gulf markets, document Arabic and English observations separately. A brand can be cited for an English explanation without appearing in an Arabic supplier answer. Do not combine those into an undefined visibility score.
The three terms
| Term | Expanded form | Working goal |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimisation | Presence in relevant search results |
| GEO | Generative engine optimisation | Presence in generated answers |
| AEO | Answer engine optimisation | Clear answers to specific questions |
AIO and LLMO are also used in overlapping ways. They are not a substitute for a list of pages, content decisions and technical checks.
Use them as working definitions
| Goal | Evidence suited to it |
|---|---|
| Search visibility | Actual query/page data and the relevant URL |
| Use in a generated answer | Saved response and its source links |
| Answering a question | Exact question and actual answer |
This is an editorial distinction, not a binding technical standard. Google’s AI-feature guidance does not require special additional optimisation. An offer should not disguise the same task as three unrelated packages.
Test a question in different environments
Choose a real buyer question, then record language, market context, date, system and search mode. Note whether the page appears, is cited or the business is merely named.
This is a suggested comparison, not a reported rank. Save actual outputs rather than presenting a hypothetical position as a studio result.
Shared foundations
Clear service pages, accessible content, internal links and consistent business facts support evaluation by people and systems. Use technical descriptions that agree with visible content.
Keep the underlying offer understandable: audience, scope, examples and a working next step. Extra terminology does not compensate for a missing service explanation.
Mention, citation and recommendation differ
A mention contains the name. A citation identifies a source. A recommendation selects the business as suitable for the stated task. A human visit requires a further observed interaction.
Use separate report fields. Do not add the same answer’s name and link together as if they were two independent leads, and do not treat a server request as an answer observation.
What a portfolio project establishes
Pucca Diana documents an analytics dashboard bringing seven platforms onto one page. That establishes an observation-related deliverable, not the value or interpretation of every metric it might display.
It does not supply a complete set of saved recommendation answers or an analytics export for this article. A dashboard or file name is not an isolated result from a particular optimisation.
Accept technical work and content together
For technical tasks, record actual URLs, access settings and observed responses. For content, check the offer, attribution and evidence. Google’s technical requirements describe access, successful response and indexable content, without guaranteeing indexing.
Name what actually changed. A published answer to a buyer question is inspectable; permanent selection by another organisation’s answer system is a different outcome.
Where the goals differ
Search position and clicks concern the result interface and subsequent interaction. A generated answer may use a source without producing a visit. A direct answer concerns how the question is addressed.
A clear heading and immediate answer can improve the explanation for readers. They do not establish a guaranteed snippet, citation or recommendation placement.
Assess an offer by its work and evidence
Ask for the starting issues, proposed changes, owners and measurement method. Keep repeated observations comparable and include negative results.
A practical report can separate technical corrections, content changes and later answer observations. It should not present a future third-party answer as a file the supplier can deliver on demand.
Observe AI-search presence separately
A strong search result does not establish a citation in a generated answer. A citation does not establish an enquiry. Record the actual event before choosing the metric.
Use different evidence for a technical response, source quality and an answer that names the brand. This makes offers comparable without assuming all systems have the same selection method.
Where the work can conflict
Keyword-heavy text can obscure the answer a reader needs. Access settings can restrict a system unintentionally. Material created solely to manipulate crawlers can diverge from the useful page shown to people.
Investigate actual issues using the responsible system’s guidance. Do not infer that allowing every training crawler is a universal requirement for search inclusion.
What a business can commission
Prioritise technical faults, clear service information, attributable work and consistent public facts. Review whether relevant external profiles describe the same actual business; do not invent a local presence to complete a directory pattern.
Our AI search and entity visibility service defines that work and observation scope. Send the current site and buyer questions so SEO, GEO or AEO becomes a concrete task rather than an undefined acronym budget.
