Product configurator cost: scope and price factors

In short

Configurator projects at Alkeme Design start from $900 (≈ AED 3,300). The quote depends on the options and dependencies, visual treatment, required output and integration work. Compare the same rule set and operating period across suppliers. A subscription fee and a development price are incomplete comparisons without setup, resources, maintenance and handover.

Configurator development at Alkeme Design starts from $900 (≈ AED 3,300). The actual price follows the rules, visual treatment, output and integration requirements. A simple selection tool and a system connected to production may share a name while representing very different work.

This guide explains those cost positions. The configurator definition guide covers what the tool does; this article focuses on comparing proposals and controlling scope.

What are suppliers actually quoting?

A price is meaningful only when the described deliverables and ongoing obligations are visible.

Offer type Initial work to identify Ongoing work to identify
Simple calculator Inputs, rules, result and interface Rule and content updates
Shop configurator Selection, price logic and cart handover Product data, compatibility and service costs
Subscription tool Setup, adaptation and resources Plan, renewals, extensions and exit
Bespoke implementation Rule model, design, build and integrations Hosting, support and approved changes

The table classifies work, not average UAE prices. Supplier figures from a different market do not establish what your project should cost. Request the same brief and a current written offer.

Four factors determine the scope

The options, visual method, result and design need separate decisions. Do not infer them all from a preview image.

1. Options and dependencies

Five colours and three sizes give 15 combinations before exclusions. More work appears when a material is only available for one model, a dimension requires another part, or a price depends on several selections.

Write, validate and test those dependencies. The cost is not simply the count of fields on the screen.

2. Visual treatment

A suitable photograph may be enough. Layered assets can show combinations of components; 3D can support a product-viewing task that needs rotation.

Each option has asset and testing work. Choose the method from the customer’s question, rather than assuming 3D is always required or always the largest project cost.

3. The completed result

An enquiry summary differs from a cart item, CRM record or production instruction. Each required destination needs a defined data handover and acceptance test.

State whether the displayed price is indicative or confirmed and which business rules determine it. A figure shown in the interface must not silently change meaning at the next step.

4. Brand and interaction design

A configurator should fit the visual identity and make the sequence understandable. Typography, labels, imagery and feedback need design and testing.

The Cargo Brothers project documents a custom pricing tool for vehicle transport. It illustrates an actual custom workflow without establishing a universal conversion improvement. See the project.

Subscription or custom development?

Compare the actual operating model. An existing tool may cover the requirement with suitable setup; bespoke work may suit particular logic or presentation.

For a 36-month planning model, calculate: setup + 36 × monthly services + resource production + maintenance + a planned move. Use the relevant introductory and renewal terms rather than multiplying a promotional fee indefinitely.

A development price also needs operating costs and handover terms. Do not assume unlimited control, no later fees or complete ownership of every third-party component from the word “custom”.

Costs that can be missed

Resource preparation can include photographs, layers or 3D models. Price maintenance needs a process and responsible person. Integrations need information from the systems they connect to.

Also establish currency, charge presentation and confirmation rules for the actual business and customer type. Relevant legal and commercial requirements should be checked for the intended market; a German pricing rule is not imported into this guide as UAE advice.

Record each item as included, optional or separate in the proposal. That makes the comparison clearer than a single unexplained total.

The hidden work: defining the rules

Rules held only by an experienced salesperson need to be written down and checked. Late discoveries can require changes to interfaces, calculations and integrations.

Begin with options, permitted combinations, exclusions and representative cases. That preparation remains useful whichever implementation route is selected.

Do not treat a workshop as proof that every exception has been discovered. Agree how newly identified requirements are reviewed and priced during the project.

What belongs in the fixed proposal?

Name the agreed results:

  • A written option and rule model.
  • A testable interaction direction.
  • Development and specified acceptance cases.
  • The required enquiry, cart or system handover.
  • Documentation and the agreed update process.

The relevant photography, modelling, hosting and shop subscriptions should be identified separately. An integration is included when named in the assignment, not merely because one appears in an example project.

How is the studio price established?

Our published starting point is from $900 (≈ AED 3,300). After reviewing the rules and output, the proposal defines the scope, schedule and fixed fee.

A limited first stage can prioritise the products and workflow that matter most now. Explain what can be added later and what preparation that requires.

The custom tools service describes the work, while pricing gives the studio starting points. Send the options, exceptions and intended result for a proposal based on your business.

Compare suppliers with the same rule matrix

Give each supplier the same options, dependencies, price rules and expected output. Include valid and invalid cases so the difference in proposed scope is visible.

Separate setup from operation, and ask about data updates, interfaces and moving to another supplier. A preview, technical rule check and quotation calculation are different deliverables.

Choose from the agreed work and its evidence. Neither the name of the package nor an attractive demonstration establishes that your particular combinations and handover are supported.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a product configurator cost?

Alkeme Design's published starting point is from $900 (≈ AED 3,300). The fixed proposal follows the rules, visual treatment, integrations and required handover. It is not a universal price for every implementation or a UAE market average.

Is subscription software cheaper?

Compare setup, recurring services, resource preparation, maintenance and a possible move over the same period. A lower initial fee does not establish the lower total. Use the actual plan and renewal terms rather than an invented monthly figure.

How can the scope be reduced sensibly?

Prepare the options and rules before development, use the simplest useful visual treatment and define a first stage around priority products. Preserve the ability to explain exclusions and hand over the result correctly.

What drives the price?

Rule dependencies, visual assets, calculation and handover requirements can all add work. A 3D interface and an integration are different tasks; their relative cost depends on the project.

Will there be running costs?

Identify hosting, the shop or CRM, external services and agreed support. The proposal should state whether any licence or recurring service applies. A custom development fee does not remove all operating responsibilities.

Are product photographs and 3D models included?

They are separate resources to specify in the proposal. Agree which existing assets can be used and which need production, as well as their preparation and maintenance.
