Motion Design

Motion design for brands: applications, process and delivery

In short

Motion design adds time, sequence and rhythm to graphic communication. A brand project can include typography, logo movement, product sequences and transitions. Specify the trigger, duration, end state and controls as well as the visual direction.

A quiet logo entry, a fast social clip and a website where every element moves can each be carefully made without belonging to the same system. Motion design defines how the brand behaves over time.

Agree sequence, pace, repetition and limits as deliberately as colour and typography. For Arabic and English material, plan actual wording and reading time in each version. An exported crop is not automatically a suitable language or channel adaptation.

What motion can do for a brand

Application Purpose Decision to make
Animated logo Identify the sender Which form appears first?
Website transition Preserve a relationship What remains visible during the change?
Interface response Confirm a state Is the result understandable?
Social clip Explain a message in its format Does it work without sound?

Choose the treatment for the task. A confirmation after a click does not need the same sequence as a film ending. The shared identity can connect both without making them identical.

Define rules instead of collecting effects

Describe the pace, transition style and elements that can move. Show those rules in actual applications. ‘Dynamic’ alone gives a future editor too much room for interpretation.

Set limits as well. A logo need not loop indefinitely and a button need not pulse continuously. Preserve attention for the information and next action.

Translate visual rules into motion

Posh Stink documents four fragrance colour worlds used in a four-part website presentation. That gives a concrete relationship to inspect: product, colour and text should remain associated through the transition.

The project description establishes the mechanism. It does not provide a measured file size or a completed accessibility report for every state.

Two real studio applications

Pucca Diana’s website intro draws the monogram from its structure. The project documents a different phone scroll treatment from the horizontal desktop presentation.

ESA Optim Trans documents brand movement within its video and social material. These show possible applications, not a universal sales result or a template that every brand must use.

Three examples with different delivery needs

ESA documents a 15-second reel, Pucca a drawing monogram intro and Posh Stink a WebGL fragrance presentation with particle transitions. Their media and scope differ.

The reel’s total duration cannot be assigned to the logo within it. A browser interaction also needs states and navigation behaviour that a linear film does not supply. Define the actual deliverable before comparing the examples.

Define formats in the brief

A vertical story and a wide website area need different compositions. Cropping can remove a name or key detail. Agree destination, background, text and sound before production.

Specify final exports and whether editable working files are required. For Arabic and English, use the actual text lengths and script requirements in the layout and timing review.

Plan reduced movement for the web

Provide a readable alternative with less non-essential movement. Preserve information, feedback and the route through the site. A static end state can be more appropriate than the original sequence played faster.

Identify which effects can disappear before polishing them. Motion design includes these behaviour decisions rather than leaving them as a late technical adjustment.

Review automatic and interaction-triggered movement separately

The browser’s prefers-reduced-motion feature can reflect a device preference. The intended implementation still needs a check: the presence of the media query alone does not prove the alternative is usable.

W3C’s 2.2.2 addresses specified automatically moving or updating content; 2.3.3, at Level AAA, addresses non-essential interaction-triggered animation. Apply their conditions and exceptions to the actual behaviour rather than claiming compliance from a short clip alone.

Agree scope and acceptance

Our motion offers cover the agreed concept, animation and finished formats. Music licences, voice work and location footage are separate where needed.

An initial request can state the message, applications, existing identity files and approximate number and length of sequences. The motion design service scopes those tasks; a request for more movement is not yet a deliverables list.

Cost the applications and their tests

Separate storyboard, scenes, format variants, revisions and integration. Logo and website starting scopes are not interchangeable motion packages.

For a browser project, include content access, relevant keyboard tasks and return navigation. Compare the message with and without decorative movement. A passed test requires a dated result on the actual implementation, not a portfolio description.

Motion design in plain language

It connects graphic choices with a planned sequence. Shapes, text and images change over time to support a message or interaction.

A small system can cover a few recurring uses. A logo entry, explanatory graphic and interface response may share rules while needing different pacing. One attractive effect does not establish the system for all future work.

Distinguish motion design, animation and filming

Animation broadly creates movement from designed states. Motion design emphasises graphic communication; filmed material records a scene. A project can combine them, with separate production work.

Likewise, a spatial-looking transition is not proof that a complete 3D product model is included. Confirm available source files and required views before choosing the production method.

What motion graphics task are you commissioning?

Begin with the communication job: explain a relationship, confirm an action or express a brand feature. Moving text and shapes are means to that result.

A 2D sequence using existing assets may be enough. Agree a storyboard before detail animation and list web and social outputs separately. Include the still alternative and playback behaviour where relevant.

Prepare a motion brief

State the brand rules, message, applications, required variants, approximate duration, existing files and approval owner. Include language, subtitles and sound requirements.

You do not need a finished animation idea. References help when you explain which property matters: readable sequencing, useful detail or a suitable pace. Copying another brand’s clip is not a substitute for that brief.

Move from storyboard to final animation

Start with descriptions or still frames to check the order of information. Then test rough timing so text can be read and a product feature does not disappear too quickly.

Approve the key message before detailed animation. A change to the central idea later can affect many completed states. The offer should explain feedback stages and how extra content is handled.

Turn one message into a sequence

Record the message, image, text and transition for each scene. ESA’s documented reel combines truck material, a counter, logo, slogan and call to action. That is an example of an ordered communication task.

The record does not establish each scene’s duration, codec or frame rate. Leave such fields open until they are agreed or verified from the actual delivery.

Derive pace from the task

Decide what someone must see, read or understand before the next change. An introductory mark and an explanation do not need identical timing.

A pause can make the important information understandable. Shared patterns should remain adaptable: a response after a click should not automatically inherit the entire sequence of a video ending.

Test explanations with actual content

Use the final terms, product names and steps. Placeholder text can conceal the real timing problem. Ask someone uninvolved to explain what they understood afterwards.

Treat that as a practical observation, not a general effectiveness study. If a spoken explanation is still needed, revise the wording or sequence before adding more effects.

Plan formats and future changes together

Version Main check
Wide video Relationship between graphic, text and space
Vertical Readable text and vertical order
Website Loading, start behaviour and still alternative
Loop Understandable restart and repetition
Still Meaning without playback

Changing products, text or languages may require a different construction from a fixed intro. Editable projects and an explanation of dependencies should be agreed when the team needs future changes.

Document the actual technical handover

Field Evidence from delivery
Duration Final file or scene record
Dimensions and frame rate File metadata
Size and codec Actual export inspection
Still image Approved static state
Browser behaviour Dated device and settings record

This is a proposed handover list. It does not invent a complete export inventory for the portfolio projects. Record the properties of the files actually supplied.

When simple means are enough

A clear transition between a few states may communicate more effectively than a complex spatial scene. Existing templates can support recurring content if the message and rights are suitable.

Commission additional work where an original sequence, complex explanation or coordinated multi-format system is needed. Describe that task rather than purchasing a number of seconds without context.

Assess value without a sales promise

For an explanation, first check understanding. For interface feedback, check the state is clear. For a brand ending, check the sender is recognisable. Those are more concrete than presumed attention.

Review whether the team can use the files and whether the message works silently and in the reduced-motion state. Sales and enquiries also depend on other factors; a change after publication does not isolate animation’s contribution.

Hand the movement system to the team

Label intro, ending, loop and web versions with their background, sound and still alternatives. Include a real use example so an editor can select the right file without the design conversation.

Collect questions from initial use before expanding the family. A missing short version can be a justified addition; a large speculative package may not be useful. Send the current assets and next real applications for a defined fixed-price scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is motion design?

The design of graphic communication over time, including animated typography, marks, product sequences and transitions.

How is motion design different from film?

Motion design focuses on designed graphic movement; filming records footage. They can be combined, but production responsibilities and costs should be specified separately.

What does brand motion cost?

Alkeme Design offers motion work individually according to scenes, applications, export variants and integration. Website or logo starting prices are not universal motion tariffs.

Are music and filming included?

Music licences, voice work and on-location filming are separate items where required. The written offer identifies the agreed concept, animation and final files.

Can a small business create its own motion content?

Simple recurring work may fit existing templates. Check the actual message, readable output, permitted assets and destination format before publishing.
