Brand Identity

Brand guidelines template: selection and practical tests

In short

An editable brand template applies agreed visual rules to a specific task. Establish the application, software and real content before choosing it. A presentation file and an empty brand-book layout do different jobs: neither automatically provides a strategy or a working identity. Test a completed example rather than judging the cover alone.

A brand guidelines template can mean an empty manual, a presentation layout or a set of business documents. Before comparing offers, establish what has actually been prepared and what decisions your team still needs to make.

Its usefulness appears in everyday work. Can someone prepare a real proposal? Does a long heading fit? Can the next person continue without repeatedly asking the designer for help? Use those tasks to assess the file, rather than the appeal of its cover.

When does a template help?

A template is especially useful when the identity decisions already exist. The colours, typography and imagery are established; the team needs a repeatable format for particular content.

A simple template can also support a limited first release if it covers the priority applications and works in the available tools. Be clear about its limits.

A preset layout cannot automatically decide what the business stands for. It may suggest a visual style without fitting the actual offer. If those foundations are unresolved, clarify them before filling the file.

Distinguish the system from the file

A design system explains relationships: what each type style does, how images are selected and how information is prioritised. A template applies those decisions to one format.

A brand book records rules. An empty book layout has not made those decisions for you.

Current situation More useful next step
The identity works but proposals vary Develop and test a proposal template
A new business has no visual foundations Clarify the direction and identity
Existing templates are bypassed Inspect usability with actual content
Several channels look unrelated Establish common rules and priorities

Test with real content

Insert a short title, a long one, a multi-item proposal and the images the team actually has. Ideal sample copy can hide practical limits.

Check the fonts and pictures too. Are they supplied, separately licensed or only visible in a preview? Can the team edit the text in its actual software?

If every new page needs arbitrary changes to spacing and type size, the structure may not fit the job. A useful template prepares recurring decisions rather than simply moving them to another file.

Custom identity work can include templates

Templates and bespoke work are not opposites. An individually developed identity can be translated into editable presentations, proposals or social formats for regular use.

Chimbá’s documented identity, packaging, website and Instagram work share deep green, coral and the heart motif. Those decisions support different applications with one recognisable relationship.

The example illustrates the difference between one finished composition and reusable rules. It does not mean every small business needs the same scope. Prioritise the work already foreseeable.

Establish the rules before building the file

The Chimbá project specifies deep green #02570f and coral #f2787d. Its origin names follow a common pattern. A planning exercise could apply fixed colour roles while changing the origin and product information.

That is a proposed exercise, not an available client download. Digital colour values also do not determine the approved print result on every material; confirm production requirements separately.

For Arabic and English use, agree the names and script relationships before populating the template. A missing approved name is an editorial dependency, not a spacing problem to hide with placeholder text.

Compare cost against scope

Alkeme Design’s complete identity costs $4,400 (≈ AED 16,150) to $24,000 (≈ AED 88,150). That range describes broader identity work, not one presentation template.

Logo and brand essentials start from $1,400 (≈ AED 5,150). That focused package does not automatically include every website, proposal or social file. The agreed applications belong in the written proposal.

Compare the files, rules, adaptations and support needed to reach a usable result. A starting price alone cannot establish whether two suppliers are quoting the same job.

What types of template are available?

Some templates document rules; others produce content. A package may include both without already containing a finished identity.

Type Main purpose Still needs
Brand-book layout Record the system Your approved decisions and examples
Business document Produce recurring information Accurate content and signature details
Presentation Assemble slides Actual text, tables and imagery
Social format Repeat a post type Topics, photographs and crop rules
Colour reference Communicate a palette Roles and appropriate combinations

Name the task before comparing file counts. A large bundle can omit the one application that matters to your team.

Which template does the team actually need?

A proposal needs repeatable service and price blocks. A presentation needs titles, text, tables and image layouts. A social system needs different subjects with a clear common signature.

Begin with a real example of the next item to be created. Kate Sun’s project documents a grid, carousel templates and story templates as distinct deliverables. “One template for everything” would not describe those different tasks adequately.

Free or paid: what should you check?

A free file can be sufficient for a limited job when editing and permitted use fit. A purchase price is not proof that the resource is bespoke or complete.

Inspect whether fonts, photographs and symbols are included or merely shown in the sample. Confirm software access, changes and output requirements in the account the team will use.

Include adaptation, testing and introduction time in the comparison. A low-cost starting file may still require considerable work before it becomes useful. A completed test gives better evidence than preview images alone.

Check the resource and usage conditions

Record the source, version and permitted applications for the file and its components. Do not assume that downloading a resource answers every question about editing or sharing it.

Keep the relevant purchase or licence information alongside the approved file. For an online tool, confirm that later users can access the same resources in their actual accounts.

This is a procurement check, not a statement of local copyright law. No supplier tariffs are compared without a dated record of the relevant plan.

Templates for Word and PowerPoint

Office files need to work with the team’s programs and habits. A polished PDF preview does not prove that headings, tables and page breaks remain editable in the original document.

Test a real proposal page and a presentation containing a long heading, table, picture and notes. If the file will be shared, open it on another appropriate team device too.

Prepared styles and layout options should cover recurring decisions. If every page requires reconstruction, the deliverable may be a sample composition rather than a reusable template.

Canva and other online tools

An online format can support collaboration when the team already uses the tool. Check the actual account’s resources and export options, rather than relying on a demonstration with different access.

Name the owner of the approved original and define who can change it. Decide how copies are made and older versions identified.

Test the intended output. An image for a social post and production artwork have different requirements. The tool’s name does not establish that either has been prepared correctly.

Word, PowerPoint, Canva or PDF?

Choose by the task and verify the working file.

Format Test before approval
Text document Long business name, several pages and a table across a page break
Presentation Heading wraps, picture replacement and chart labels
Online tool Permissions, fonts, exports and another authorised account
PDF guide Rules are findable and related editable files accessible

Apexor’s documented guidelines explain its logo, palette, typography and applications. They do not establish that a particular Word or PowerPoint file exists. Use the project record for what it actually documents.

Adapt a template to the existing rules

Assign the correct logo version, colour role and type style to each area. Replacing decorative sample colours alone may leave an unsuitable hierarchy underneath.

Then insert the actual content. Images need appropriate crops; longer copy may require another layout option. If the format only works after removing essential information, it may be too restrictive for the brief.

Document allowed changes in a short instruction. A focused application does not automatically need a new comprehensive brand book when the wider foundations already work.

What decisions must the template contain?

Specify the type hierarchy, colour roles and image treatment. Empty boxes do not constitute an identity.

Before approval, insert a long product name and a short notice. Both should work within the same rules. For bilingual use, repeat that test with the relevant Arabic and English content, including mixed-script information.

If an existing resource is being adapted, supply the actual file and identify its components. Agree whether the job covers individual applications or also the development of the underlying system.

PowerPoint as a practical application

Test the presentation with real titles, text, images and tables. Identify which elements a routine user may change.

A preview is not a working-file check. Open and edit the template in the intended environment, then confirm type availability, image replacement and export. That reveals whether every slide still needs manual repair.

Use a template to document the brand book

A prepared structure can help record decisions once they have been developed and tested. Start with the marks, colours, typography and priority applications. Add other chapters when the business needs them.

Fill each rule with an example from the actual identity. A blank page called “clear space” has not defined clear space. A palette has not explained every text/background combination.

Remove sections without a purpose. A shorter document with valid files and clear examples can be more useful than filling every page in a large purchased layout. The brand-book guide covers the handover in more detail.

Test the template before regular use

Have a future user create a new application with real content. Observe the task and add necessary verbal explanations to the written instructions.

Look for recurring workarounds: constant font shrinking, distorted pictures or spacing rebuilt each time. Those patterns can identify a missing layout option or a mismatch with the content.

Review the exported result in its actual medium. A presentation needs reading at the intended distance, a social graphic in a small view, and print artwork against production requirements. The editor’s working view is not the whole test.

Use a completed sample rather than an empty cover

A proposed Chimbá exercise could combine the origin name, tasting description and product image. Repeat it with the longest name and a different picture. Observe wrapping, readability and manual repair.

For digital text, WCAG 2.2 criterion 1.4.3 specifies minimum contrast of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for qualifying large text, with defined exceptions. Check the actual text/background pair; possession of two brand colours does not establish a passing result. The W3C explanation sets out the criterion and exceptions.

This is a proposed test. It is not a claim that a client template has passed an accessibility review.

When is a bespoke template worthwhile?

A bespoke file can help when standard formats do not support an important recurring task. The identity may already be established; the work is then applying its rules to a useful production format.

Show everyday examples, programs, users and difficulties. That helps define a limited commission without restarting the whole branding project.

If the palette, type and imagery remain inconsistent, resolve those foundations first. Otherwise the template simply contains another version of the same unresolved decisions.

Agree handover and maintenance

The handover should include the approved original, agreed variants and understandable editing instructions. Record resources to obtain separately and who can update the underlying layout.

Alkeme Design does not publish one fee for every type of template. The proposal names the files and adaptations. Developing a complete identity and adapting one document are different assignments.

After introduction, gather feedback and add genuinely missing cases. Keep one recognisable approved source instead of letting untracked copies become competing versions.

Commission and accept the finished files

Our complete identity costs $4,400 (≈ AED 16,150) to $24,000 (≈ AED 88,150), and logo and brand essentials start from $1,400 (≈ AED 5,150). Neither figure establishes a separate office-template price.

The proposal should name editable formats, example content, fonts, usage terms, feedback and handover. A useful final test asks the future user to create a fresh application from the resources.

The resulting task can reveal missing instructions. An attractive preview does not answer whether someone can prepare tomorrow’s actual proposal.

What selection mistakes should you avoid?

Do not choose by the best-looking preview alone. Confirm that the file supports the content types and output needed. A format designed for short advertising headlines may not suit detailed proposals.

Avoid importing another brand’s logic without review. Colours, symbols and imagery can look coherent in the sample without representing your business.

A smaller suitable file can be more useful than a large bundle with mostly unused formats. The recurring application in your team remains the measure.

Decide from the next real use

Start with the materials the business will need in the coming months. Test a candidate with those cases. Clarify the identity first if the visual foundations remain unresolved.

The identity elements guide explains the system, and the brand identity service describes the studio work. Send the existing file and a typical task to define the appropriate scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brand guidelines template?

It is a prepared document structure for recording the brand's rules. The empty layout does not contain your own approved logo decisions, colour roles or examples. Editable presentation and social templates are related production files with different purposes.

Can a free template be enough?

It can suit a limited task if editing, exports, resources and permitted use fit the brief. Test the actual file and its conditions. A free download does not automatically provide suitable brand decisions, and a paid preview does not prove usability.

Can a template replace a custom identity?

It may cover a focused application when the foundations are established. If positioning, imagery and several related applications still need development, one prepared layout cannot settle all of those decisions.

Which brand elements should be specified?

Identify the required marks, colour roles, typography, imagery and application rules. State which editable files are supplied, what the team can change and which resources need separate licences.

How do I test Arabic and English templates?

Use actual approved names, short and long headings, a table, mixed-script information and the available images. Open and export the file in the team's real account and software. Review reading direction by function rather than mirroring every element.

What does a custom brand identity cost?

Alkeme Design's complete identity costs $4,400 (≈ AED 16,150) to $24,000 (≈ AED 88,150). This is not a universal price for one presentation or office template. The written proposal names the actual files, rules and adaptations.

Do you provide a tested template download in this article?

No download is offered here. The Chimbá and Kate Sun examples explain how to assess real applications. The guide does not imply that their client resources are available for reuse.
